High School Musical PARENT'S MEETING
MONDAY Dec 21, 5:45-6:15 BEMS auditorium.
I know this is a crazy time of year. I'm asking for just 30 minutes, Monday Dec. 21 from
5:45-6:15 at the BEMS auditorium. There are a few important differences this year from other years because we double cast. I realize this is a MONDAY, which is why it's earlier and short. I will start on time and do my best to be succinct. If you can't attend, email vanica.crane@besd.net. Have a friend pick up all paperwork given that night so you stay aware of what's going on.
There are so many (awesome) kids in this show. You will have to pay attention, be organized and responsible. I look forward to working with all of you.

LEAD AUDITIONS:
You will sing your audition while Mrs Crane plays the piano--not the accompaniment, just simple piano. You just need to focus on strong singing and performing!
At callbacks, you will need to demonstrate your ability to harmonize. We will learn the parts as a group, then you will demonstrate individually.
Be prepared, be confident, have fun!

A Step-By-Step Guide to total awesomeness in Auditioning (a.k.a. "How to Get in to the BEMS school musical")
Step 1: Sign up for an audition Time Slot. (Hold your horses on this one. Stop by Room 1 any time starting Weds. November 18 to sign up. But don't forget, or you won't have a spot! YES. You can sign up for a spot with your friends. It's more fun that way, Silly)
Step 2: Fill out your online Audition Application by following this link.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1crhwnNxViJAl6CLRuDJxlKFB9T_4t6uQws3gYiqaZzs/viewform?usp=send_form
Step 3: Make sure you know the audition song/dance "We're All in this Together" learned at the BUZZ time clinics. If you were unable to attend the clinics or just want a refresher, you can study the audition dance/song here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVA6FSJxiCg
ANYONE who wants to be in the show has to know this song and dance.
Step 4: Decide!! Do you want to be considered for a leading role?
No? You're done. Just be sure and actually show up for your audition on December 1 or 2.
Yes? Ok. Cool. Read On.
Now, are you a strong, solo singer?
Not a strong singer, but I'm still awesome.
(or if you just like the parts below...)
Then you should audition for Jack Scott, Coach Bolton, or Ms. Darbus. Learn the lines for the character you're most interested in, and be prepared to perform them at the audition:
JACK: Hey Wildcats, it's request time again, and this one goes out from Vice Principal Vinnie Ichikawa to the person who took the air out of his tires...(Coach Bolton enters and hands Jack a note) Sorry, folks....seems we have another request that goes something like this, "Troy Bolton, get your butt to basketball practice on the double or you are grounded for a week!" Whoa. Later, Peeps!
COACH BOLTON: Where's my team, Darbus?! And what the heck are they doing in here?! (to Darbus) May we have a word? (to Troy and Chad) You two, into the gym, right now. Darbus, we are days away from the biggest game of the year. Chad and Troy are my two star players--you can't have them acting like idiots when they should be at practice!
Ms. DARBUS: (leading a theatre imagination game exercise) Lovely work, all of you. James, I had no idea an earthworm could have such depth, such pain. Now, gather in a circle for our last little exposure to the magic that is theatre. This is called the Ball of Noise. The idea is to pass around an invisible ball, while making some kind of sound to go with it. Once passed to the next person, the ball can land in any part of the body. You are limited only by your imaginations. I'll start! (Be creative with the "ball" for a moment!)
I have EPIC PIANO and ACTING skills (and I'm a girl):
You should audition for Kelsi. I'm assuming we don't have that many epic piano players...but if you consider yourself to be one, please see Mrs. Crane in her room for the sheet music you need to learn for the audition. Listen to the track for tempo questions. At the audition, Mr. Forsgren and Mrs. Crane will sing the parts of Troy and Gabriella, and you must be able to play while we sing, plus say your lines. This is probably the hardest role in the show. Just sayin.'
TRACK:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Foqez1FFO20
YES! I'm a strong singer!
Wonderful! Pick a lead to audition for.
If you are interested in Chad, Taylor, Zeke, Martha, or Kratnoff, your "lead" audition is easy-peasy. After singing "We're all in this together" with the group of 5, you will step forward and do it by yourself! That's it!
Tips to stand out from the crowd: Energy! A big smile! Looking like you're having fun! Singing on pitch! Being fearless on the "freestyle" portion of the audition!

Parent Note
Hi, Wonderful Parents! Wow! Your kids have been working so hard and having so much fun! They are putting together such a great show. You're going to love it. I can't wait for you to see what they've accomplished.
I sent a note home last week and am attaching it below if you didn't get to see one. There were several students absent that missed it. Absences really need to come to a stop in March so we can wrap up the final details of our show. With the trimester ending, we get to put up our set and that really puts a kink in the staging. We need to really know WHO goes where, which means we need every performer up on that stage. We're almost done...just a few more weeks. Hang in there and hopefully you'll feel like it was worth all the effort here very soon!****Many students have not missed at all and have been so faithful in their attendance. THANK YOU!
LONGER PRACTICES: Watch the calendar because with March comes longer practices. We have to do staging with the set, lighting design, costume checks, and lots of other exciting things to make sure you have something cool to see when you come to our show. Please be patient.
I will work to keep you informed. There are lots of girls waiting for their skirts/dresses. We are sewing and HOPING that darn shipment gets here soon. If you are waiting for a costume item from me, please don't stress. We will make sure every person on that stage looks wonderful.

Updated Costume Note
**Special Note: We have fabric purchased and are working on the TEEN skirts. If we need more sewers, we'll let you know.
Kim and Co: OK! We have ordered a nice dress for each girl. Some of them have already arrived, and some of them won't be here for several weeks yet. They are $45-$60 dresses that you get to keep! You need to pay $25
to Mrs.Gunn in the office by Feb. 15 but you get to KEEP your dress. The rest
will come from our costume budget. You still need nude tights and pumps. YES,
they can be strappy “show” shoes.
The color is really what matters to me, and I like the idea of having a group of teens in pumps
for variety—however, if you think wearing heels will kill you, just get nude
flats. You also need a slip. A “petticoat” style slip would make your dress have
that 50’s “poof” but you can wear any slip you have. If you want to
throw a cardigan over your dress for some of the scenes, go right ahead. Alli Hollingsworth:
for telephone hour, let’s have you in a cardigan and capris so doing the splits
is a little easier!
ALL
OTHER GIRL TEENS: I will be taking your
waist measurements and waist-knee measurements and then you’ll be
given fabric and elastic and need a simple skirt made
from it. (**SEE NOTE ABOVE)You get to keep the skirt. THEN, find yourself a simple blouse that would
go with your skirt, button down the front or something that matches “50’s” style
when you look at pictures online. We
decided to not go with white shirts
if possible, but if you already got one, that’s fine. Wear white. We just don’t want a
“sea of white” on stage. So your costume
will be: Skirt, top, white ankle socks,
white keds or other flat shoe. You will have enough fabric that you can use the
leftovers for a neck scarf or hair tie. Fabric will be out to you by Feb. 6, and your skirt
needs to be ready for costume check on March 5th. Please wear a slip under your skirt.
Any slip is fine, but a petticoat-style slip will make your skirt “poofy.”
Sweet
Apple WOMEN Community:
Alright, cute girls!! I’ve stewed
about what to do for your costumes, and my genius Mom
suggested we let you guys raid your closets, your Mom’s
closets, your GRANDMA’S closets, your neighbor’s closets (you get the picture) and see
what you can find! Look online at “50’s
style dresses for women” --not teens.
Study the styles and try to find something that could fit the time
period. Dresses with a nice belted-waist
are very appropriate. Have fun seeing
what you can find. They need to be modest (no cleavage or short skirts) and not too flashy/colorful. You need to have nude tights, a slip, and a nice shoe
that goes with the dress. Wear what you
find to costume check on March 5. I can’t wait to see what
you come up with. If you’re stuck, visit with Mrs.
Crane after rehearsal.
EVERYBODY
ELSE: Go with the information on the
previous note. Thanks so much.
“Bye Bye Birdie” Updated
Costume List (January 25, 2015)
All costumes due on
MARCH 5th for COSTUME CHECK, but it’s a good idea to not wait until the last
minute.
Conrad Birdie:
You need to get some tight fitting black jeans ASAP (our costume
designer—aka my MOM is coming on Feb. 2 to pick
up the jeans to custom design them, so please
have them by that date if at all possible!
Avoid “Low Rise” jeans! We want
these to stay up on you while you’re dancing) We also need to know what SIZE you fit in
a suit jacket. She is sewing you one and needs the size. She will be taking
your measurements on the 2nd for the jumpsuit as well, so please be there. You also need a “muscle” shirt—plain white
T.
Penn Station Chorus:
I have the yellow cardigans. You need to come up with a cute 50's outfit to go underneath it. Remember flat shoes go with capris, bobby socks and keds go with dresses/skirts.
Kim and Co: OK! We have ordered a nice dress for each girl. Some of them have already arrived, and some of them won't be here for several weeks yet. They are $45-$60 dresses that you get to keep! You need to pay $25

online ASAP!!! I don’t want any sad girls without their costumes. The website we are using has been used
successfully for BEHS’ Productions Co., so I feel fairly confident we should be
OK using them. If you are not comfortable ordering a dress online, you need to
find or sew as exact a match as possible. (with the exception of Penn Station
and Kim & Co—uniformity is important to these groups) The
website is www.bestdress.us
***Anyone
who has someone to sew for them that would rather SEW than buy, look at the
dress options online and then create something very similar. IF YOU CAN’T FIND YOUR SIZE, again, find
something online or sew something as similar as possible (with the exception of
Penn Station and Kim & Co—uniformity is important to these groups)
***If you
sew your own dress, remember, no bare shoulders or cleavage, and NO black, red,
white or royal blue dresses. Those colors are for Rosie and Kim. Thanks!!
***We are
choosing reasonably priced costumes and allowing you almost 2 months to provide
them. If you are concerned about the costs involved, please email Mrs. Crane.
No student will be denied the opportunity to perform based on financial need.
ALBERT: Well-fitting
dark suit, 2 shirts, 2 Red ties, dark socks, well-polished dark shoes. (not
baggy pants, please--- but not
creepy-tight! Google 50’s men’s suits to see what I’m talking about!)
ROSIE: 4
black/red/white outfits (dresses, pencil skirts, capris with heels and a
blouse…etc) Black/red heels/flats
CONRAD: Mrs. Crane’s Mom is vacationing, but when she returns next
week, we will take your measurements and begin
sewing some Birdie costumes!! (By “we”…I
mean, MY MOM will!) If you could find or
borrow a sweet, black leather
jacket (for “A lot of Livin’) and get dark socks and shiny black dress shoes
that’d be fantastic.
KIM: 3 or 4
Royal Blue Dresses (She needs a dress specifically for One Boy that coordinates
with Kim & Co. It is #
r-1000-13 on bestdress.us. She also needs a “fancy” dress for the Ed Sullivan show.
We like r-1014-9 in blue on
bestdress.us. The other two dresses we
like are r-1190-4 and the 50’s Hetty Polka Dot Collar Dress Blue). Nude
tights and nude pumps.
MRS. MACAFEE:
Needs a “house” dress, and an “about town” dress for the community scenes
and Ed Sullivan. Use
bestdress.us numbers 2251, 2252 as design inspiration. Please use floral or
other appropriate
patterns if at all possible. ROYAL BLUE is the MacAfee family color, so look
for blues. Can have more dresses if you are having
fun sewing, but needs only 2. Thanks!
Nude tights and black pumps. I
will be looking for a hat.
MR. MACAFEE: Dark, well-fitting dress pants (not baggy, please---but not
creepy-tight! Google 50’s men’s suits to
see what I’m talking about!) 2 button
down the front shirts and 1-2 cardigans.
2 ties that have ROYAL
BLUE in them. Dark socks and
well-polished dark dress shoes.
HUGO PEABODY: Well-fitted dark dress pants, dark
socks and shoes. Hugo needs a couple of
button down the front shirts. I would love to see him have a
couple of V-neck argyle sweaters to go over the top. Kim wears
royal blue, so ideally he’ll complement that.
No white shirt!
HARVEY JOHNSON: You need what all the teen boys
need, except please also get a BOWTIE.
MAE PETERSON: I
have the fur coat—black or brown…you choose!
We need to decide if we should put you in a nice, matronly 50’s dress, or like a Grandma’s House dress. Do we want boots or saggy nylons and pumps?
I think we can just spray your hair gray and then roll it up in
old-fashioned pins. Hat?? She acts so
picked on, I think 1 dress would be enough. If you want a change, Karlee, you
can have 2! Ask your genius parents their
opinion and then get back to me! ; )
REPORTERS: Dark pants, short-sleeved white shirts, dark ties, dark socks and dark shoes. Ask all of your friends and relations if they have a fedora (hat)
you can borrow. Let me know ASAP if you find one.
GLORIA RASPUTIN: Tight-fitting capris with a bold-print blouse, high heels (go
as high as you dare, but remember you
have to dance) Curly blonde wig
MAYOR:
Dark, well-fitted suit and tie. Dark shoes and socks. I will see about
getting a hat—if we decide to have you wear one.
Sweet Apple Community MEN/Men who
sing ‘KIDS’: Button down the front shirt (NOT
WHITE!), tie, dark pants, dark
socks, dark shoes. You can wear a
cardigan or sweater vest too to add to your manliness! Your hair has
to be well-trimmed—no bushy hair or mullets.
This was the 50’s people. If you have a “wife” it would be awesome if you asked her what
color her dress is and then get a tie to match.
So awesome. Yeah.
Sweet Apple Community WOMEN/Women who
sing ‘KIDS’: You
need to go to www.bestdress.us as soon as possible
and order one of the following dresses (or have someone who loves you sew one
that’s VERY similar!) 1090-1 cherry 1090-3 cherry R1142 floral YWY
8663-2 r1104-2 You will need nude nylons and black
pumps as well. I will see about getting
hats for some of you. If you know someone with an awesome 50’s-style hat,
borrow it!!
Teen Boys: Dark dress pants (not too baggy, please!), dark socks and
shoes. Button down the front shirt. It can be long, or short-sleeved. KIM & Co. “boyfriends”—it would be
awesome if you would check the list below and find a shirt that matches your
“girlfriend.” It was the 50’s. Matching
your sweetie was cool. NO WHITE
SHIRTS!!!! Well-trimmed hair. No bushy
hair or mullets!
Teen Girls (that are NOT in Penn
Station transition or Kim & Co): You need a nice, thick white top. It
can be plain, like a nice Tshirt, or it can be fitted, like a button-down. We
will be taking your measurements and sewing darling polka dot skirts and
scarves for you! IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT LIKES TO SEW THAT LIVES WITH YOU,
PLEASE HAVE THEM CONTACT MRS. CRANE! (I’ll even put their name in the
program…..ooooooo) You also need white bobby socks and white keds.
Penn Station Girls: You are a special grouo and we want matching yellow polka dot
dresses. You can wear this dress for the entire show, or you can get measured
for a skirt and have a change of clothes. Your choice. You need to go to www.bestdress.us
ASAP!!! These take 6 weeks to get here!
The dress you need to order is r1000-14
It is yellow and polka dotted and absolutely darling—like you! You need
white bobby socks and white keds.
Optional—you can purchase a petticoat/style slip to make your dress more
poofy. Let me know if you have any
difficulty with getting this dress.
ED SULLIVAN/ TEEN CHORUS:
Plan on your regular costume—we might throw choir robes on you for “Hymn
for a Sunday Evening”
but your regular costume is fine for the Ed Sullivan Show.
KIM & CO. (Kim see your notes above): We want
ONE BOY to be super-dreamy, so the dresses you wear for the show are all the
same pattern. We are using 3 colors: light blue, pink and green. You have been assigned a color. If you’re not
happy with what you got, TRADE someone.
We assigned this so it would be balanced on stage. You need nude tights
and nude pumps as well, and (OPTIONAL) you could get a petticoat-style slip to
make your dress more poofy. You may also get a white (or other solid color)
cardigan to put over your dress when you’re not doing ONE BOY. Order your
dresses ASAP at www.bestdress.us
PINK
(r1000-17): Amelia Naumann, Morgan Taylor, Alli Hollingsworth, Abby Chase GREEN (r1000-15): Kallie Bair, Savanna
Crane, Savannah Taylor, Karen Ferry
BLUE(r1000-16): Emma Ashcroft, Lexi Sutton, Sarah Dinsdale, Ally
Braegger
**Ally
Braegger—you might need 2 dresses so you have something else for the Penn
Station scene…Look at bestdress.us –don’t do black, white, red, or royal
blue—and remember the other girls are in yellow, so ?? See what you can come up
with if you want a different outfit for that scene. Or you could just throw a sweater over the
dress.
